From February 28 to March 7 anyone and everyone had the opportunity to attend the Philadelphia Flower Show sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society held annually at the Philadelphia Convention Center. With a “Passport to the World” guests experienced flower exhibits from India, Brazil, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States. Not to mention there was wine tasting, vendors, entertainment, demonstrations and lectures all amongst the exquisite floral arrangements. The demonstrations included how to build a patio planter or a castle gardener with experts in that field.

The World Bazaar offered a unique shopping adventure with handmade pottery, silks and goods just to name a few. Live Indian craft demonstrations were exposed from the Crafts Council of West Bengal. Pictured below is Madhu Mangal Malakar, he creates delicate art using Shola, a plant that grows in the marshy water-logged areas of eastern Indian states.

This craft has been a tradition in India for centuries now. Recently they received an international reputation for the beauty, eco-friendliness and superb craftsmanship of these hand-made flowers.

To tie in the ambiance of the Indian markets, there was a flower exhibit by Jamie Rothstein that revealed flowers that jewel and Indian wedding. This exhibit received the PNC People’s Choice award.

The exhibits were extraordinary, and one of a kind. Any designer would have received inspiration from these assortments. The Africa exhibit portrayed the culture in a humanitarian demeanor with exposure of their clothing done in a floral fashion.

From gourmet Italian food by DiBruno Brothers, to music by Brazil’s Minas and Bollywood dancers, The Flower Show truly was a multicultural experience and it certainly has received quite the reputation in the city of Philadelphia.

On Thursday, January 21, PAWS, (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) the largest animal rescue organization in Philadelphia held a fashion show at TRUST in Old City. PAWS is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals in Philadelphia.

A fashionable event for a good cause seems like the perfect place to be. Cocktails were served from Swig Bartending and Finlandia. Not to mention the hors devours were from Table 31, Joshua’s Catering and Cuba Libre. Mike Jerrick from Fox 29 News and Good Morning Philadelphia took on the role of being the emcee. Media crew from NBC 10 and Fox 29 tore the catwalk by wearing a women’s collection from Pileggi Boutique and a men’s collection was from Distante Clothing. Some models included Kerri-Lee Halket, a news anchorwoman of Fox 29 as well as their weatherman John Bolaris.

One of the fun facts about this event is that TRUST (formerly known as F.UE.L.) was the Real World Philadelphia house. After a night of fashion, drinks, and appetizers all for a good cause.

Dana Spain, the founder and president of PAWS states “have some fun, look at great fashions, and raise money to save the homeless and abandoned animals of Philadelphia.” The night truly fulfilled this statement.

BECKY SHAW IN PHILADELPHIA

If you want a good laugh, a show that serves meaning, Becky Shaw is the perfect pick for you! This fantastic play is under the direcion of Obie award winner Anne Kauffman and Obie award winning playwright Gina Gionfriddo (writer and producer of “Law & Order.)”

Suzanna sets up her best friend Max on a blind date with Becky, her husbands mysterious co-worker; a chain of catastrophes is inadvertently set in motion, forever changing their lives. The play is cutting and witty, and so suspenseful that it feels like a psychological thriller. The show is charming and romantic, yet completely thrilling leaving viewers on the edge of their seats always wondering what will happen next.

The show was very fresh and displayed the most incredible modern interpertation of what a show is. It almost felt as if we were watching a live taping of a sitcom, as part of the studio audience. This show is definitely a posh pick and I highly recommend you see it!

If we could describe the show in five words, they would be: bubbly, real, humorous, dramatic, and mouth-watering (leaves you craving for what’s next).

Previously set to close January 31, the Wilma theatre has recently announced their extension of the show through February 7. Tickets are $36 – $65 and are available by calling the Wilma Box Office at (215) 546-7824 or online at www.wilmatheater.org.
Saturday was highly anticipated, as the winning school of the Student Design Award was announced (we’ll get to that later!). Marina Makaron Moscow had such a fresh show, the models all had funky hair do’s and dolly-style makeup. Marina is such an enthusiatic and bright soul and this shows in everything she does. All of her beautiful clothing and accessories evoke those qualities she holds and that’s what people love about her pieces, not to mention that they look great on!

The Hustle was an incredible band, they performed for a full house, and wherever you looked people were jamming. We loved the Hustle so much, we asked them to be guest performers at Fight For Cure’s Ribbon Ball! The band members were super nice, they loved talking to fans and PFW attendee’s.

Parke & Ronen designs swimsuits for every type of man- a variety of styles, colors, and cuts were shown to the crowd and people LOVED what they saw…or maybe they just loved the half naked men??
PHILADELPHIA FASHION WEEK

Lights, Camera, Fashion! Day two of Philadelphia Fashion Week brought in even more recognition, more people, more cameras and most importantly more fun! Today’s festivities kicked off with a show by Philadelphia University which blew the whole armory away. These students certainly gave the other universities participating in fashion week [and competing to win a showcase in Macy's department store] a run for their money. Philadelphia University students showed glamorous dresses of both long and short lengths, fur vests & shaws, swimwear, contemporary/everday looks, and wedding wear. There were certainly some stunning, unforgettable pieces in this show including a dress that floated in the air, held up by what seemed to be hanger wire or corset inserts, this dress was impeccably made. It was both tasteful and risqué all at once and certainly one of my favorites. ThePoshReview applauds Philadelphia University for their incredible work.

All of the Dj’s kept the crowds entertained playing great music all night long, shout out to DJ Phsh who I bumped into later in the evening on his way up to the DJ booth for his set. Nine Days showed off some sexy jeans, but heres a fact most people don’t know about the brand; In 1730 George Scott in the sloop, Little George, sailed from the Guinea Coast with a cargo of 96 captives, 35 of whom were men. Days later the captives slipped out of their shackles and chaines, and at 4:30 in the morning, attacked the ship and crew, successfully overpowering and imprisoning them in the cabins below deck. The men took control of the ship and guided it back to Sierra Leone coast in NINE DAYS. Where, after exchanging the freedom of the 96 slaves for the freedom of the captain and crew, they abandoned the ship. Those nine days were about successfully rebelling against a system intent on keeping others in a box… Nine Days brand was created to never allow people to be slaves; Slaves to stereotypes, labels, and limitations.

Nine Days, Photo Credit: Luba Patlakh

The biggest and most awaited shows of the night were the last two, S.Love & Triple Five Soul. The S.Love show had a really deep, grungy theme- all of the models wore covers on their high platform shoes, leaving mystery and covering their feet. They all stopped in creepy, slow motioned poses which engaged the audience making them curious as to what exactly was going on. S.Love had phenomenal dresses in subtle black and white colorings, with some hints of purples. All of the pieces had painted black lines on them adding a very contemporary and unconventional appeal. This line stood out from the rest because of its ultra differentiated patterns and inventive notes.

S.Love, Photo Credit: Luba Patlakh

During the S.Love show models walked the runway to a variety of beats but one that stood out and I felt fit this line very well was Jay-Z’s: Brooklyn go hard.

S.Love, Photo Credit: Luba Patlakh

Through the night Lucky Strike slider burgers were in full effect as they were on Thursday, but tonight there was something a bit more sophisticated, a cheese and crackers table and the V.I.P hosted yummy h’ors d’oeuvres courtesy of Catering by Miles. Tu Phace was the headlining act and performed their signature Fashion Week song, Smile for the flash. Their performance lasted throughout the Triple 5 Soul show which many Fashion Week visitors were highly anticipating. The show was a great success and the crowd went wild for Tu Phace; after the show ended guests were dancing on the runway stage, showing their love and support for him.

It was a very exciting second day of PFW and Saturday is expected to bring in a major crowd. There will be a performance by The Hustle and the winning school of the Student Design Award will be announced.

Bocca is a sexy Mediterranean location that serves delicious Mediterranean and Spanish influenced tapas, presented by Chef Chris D’ambro. But the food isn’t the only fabulous thing about this exquisite spot. The night life is classy and exclusive as well. Bocca has taken over the old Amici Noi location at 236 Market St. in the famous Olde City and seems to be a growing nightlife gem. The location has a very open layout, that leaves all doors/windows open in the summer which offer easy patio seating, perfect for people watching. The interior hosts a sexy exposed brick wall with modern touches of suede banquettes, raised ceilings, and metal light fixtures.

There is endless possibility to create the perfect atmosphere at Bocca and this weekend the party will be rocking with Dj Jack Muler, who refers to his sound as “dirty/funky/vocal/classic/tech.”

HOTEL PALOMAR PHILADELPHIA

Kimpton Hotels will be welcoming a new addition to their family as Hotel Palomar (their first Philadelphia boutique hotel) is set to open this Fall. Hotel Palomar is the first green hotel in Philadelphia and the first LEED certified hotel in the Kimpton family. The 92.5 million dollar project will transform the city’s Architects Building, located near Rittenhouse Square at 17th and Sansom streets.

Philadelphia, Architects Building

New, energy-efficient mechanical systems were installed. Recycled materials were used wherever possible—in floor tiles and the ceiling, for example. Low-flow fixtures in bathrooms will keep water consumption to a minimum. A water filtration system will eliminate on-property use of bottled water. The 100 percent nonsmoking hotel will also include in-room recycling containers.

The hotel will implement a green stay with these green programs: Luxury, eco-friendly bath amenities, Recycling program for cups, clothes hangers, batteries and more; Rooms and linens cleaned with eco-certified cleaning supplies; Towel and linen reuse program; Guestroom energy management system; Guest and employee dry cleaning service will use eco-friendly methods and products; Unused and partially used bath amenities will be donated to community programs; and Paperless guest check-in/out service will reduce hotel paper use.

The 234-room Hotel Palomar will be the city’s first highly stylized, up-scale boutique hotel and gathering spot, and fill a void that previously existed for Philadelphia’s sophisticated corporate, leisure, and convention-travel customer base. Kimpton called upon hotel design guru Dayna Lee of Powerstrip Studio to help make this hotel magnificent. The project will also include a new ground-floor chef-driven restaurant and bar; more than 6,000 square feet of meeting space – including a 16- person high-tech board room – and a 3,000 square foot, meticulously preserved, penthouse-level ballroom with original ceiling molding and sweeping views of the city on three sides. The building architectural significance will add to the hotels lavish experience and outstanding accommodations.

Le Méridien Philadelphia is crossing the finish line to completion. They are nearing their grand opening which is set for November 1, 2009. Carved from a Georgian revival-style building, Le Méridien Philadelphia is looking to be a gorgeous entry. Designers at Blackney Hayes Architects have made a fine restoration of what was a 1912 Horace Trumbauer-designed building.

The historical building that the Le Méridien Philadelphia has recycled is an absolute gem. A predominantly black and white décor with hints of reds match splendidly with the natural dark wood paneling. Travel and exploration is the theme carried throughout the hotel, as evidenced in sculptures, light fixtures and wall coverings. When it does open, the Le Meridien Philadelphia will have- 202 rooms on five floors, a 90-seat restaurant (Amuse), a 40-seat lobby lounge (Le Amuse) and a grand ballroom with dramatic views of City Hall.

After a weekend of partying and drinking, what better way to re-coup… than to continue partying and drinking? DETOX, a new sunday- outdoor party has hit the Philadelphia scene. Detox is the best place to recover from the weekend because its a very relaxed outdoor atmosphere. It’s a place where you can come and feel the house beats and drink the famous 84oz. fishbowls! Focusing on music, relaxation and rejuvenation, Detox takes opens the doors to a different type of event for Philly. Dance/ House music is definitely around Philly but it’s growing more and more in the city and a lot of people are fans! House beats bring an energy that most genre’s of music are unable to evoke out of people, but at Bamboo Bar it’s inevitable to get up and start moving your body to the beat.

Wildinout Promotions, a local Philadelphia promotional company, created a special on Wildinout .TV that takes party-goers on a tour of Detox Sunday’s at Bamboo Bar, Check it out:
